Anaconda3 Usage — NO…. NO GO THERE!!

A few years back, I attempted to set up Anaconda — ran into all kinds of headaches and pain trying to get that older version up and running.

NOTE: Putting this up on one of my sites due to my non-puritan, non-pious language that some of the moderators on those sites do not like…. You know, like using words such as ‘pissed off’ or ‘crappy’…. even though a former Marine Platoon Sergeant, “me” not much of a profanity user (i.e. the much harsher, foul language) but still, too coarse for many sites.

At that time, I had gone through a significant amount of research, searching on the ‘Net, including on the Anaconda site… NADA… Could not find a resolution for Anaconda installation errors on Windows 10. Very, VERY PISSED OFF about that software and wanted to stay away from it FOREVER…!!!! So, removed it, rebooted the PC, again. Reinstalled Python and Jupyter Notebook, no more python issues.

Well, after all this time has passed, Windows 11 came along and there is Anaconda3, the latest version. I figured, what the hell, give them another chance today.

TODAY — FOUR friggin’ hours later, still seeing Anaconda3 installation issues. And from reading other comments/blogs from the past few years (a couple from even older posts) — Anaconda is STILL AN ISSUE for many, MANY users…

  • Extract: _anaconda_depends-2024.06-py312_mkl_2.conda <←- this step took FOREVER (~ 5–8 minutes and is what many complained about it sitting there [or in ver mkl_1])
  • then, when it FINALLY continues on, you get this error:

** ERROR conda.core.link:_execute(950): An error occurred while installing package ‘defaults::xlwings-0.31.4-py312haa95532_0’.

** Rolling back transaction: …working… done

  • and you then receive another pair of error messages:

** CondaError: Cannot link a source that does not exist. C:\ProgramData\anaconda3\pkgs\xlwings-0.31.4-py312haa95532_0\Lib\site-packages\xlwings\quickstart_standalone.xlsm

** Running conda clean --packages may resolve your problem.

** ()

  • this clean — packages step does not work for most users….

** ::error:: Failed to link extracted packages to C:\ProgramData\anaconda3!

  • for these errors, there were/are NO solid answers. Some folks stated they got it to work but their solutions did not work for others…

The time, ohhhh the valuable time lost:

  • playing around with System Environment Variables multiple times,
  • verifying the PC’s PATH content,
  • rebooting PC several times to install, uninstall and delete folders,
  • testing,
  • etc., etc., etc…… enough effort to try ANYONE’s patience.

As to the number of users I am referring to and the ones that do not post anything — think TIP of the iceberg level… The content is all there for you to check out. If there is any interest, here are several sites that were perused:

Soooo, my advice, same as others have indicated:

  • DO NOT WASTE YOUR VALUABLE TIME ON ANACONDA

Just stick with Python, Jupyter Notebook and install all the libraries you believe you will need via:

  • CMD terminal window or Powershell
  • VS Code

I would never recommend Anaconda software to anyone. Ever.

But, if I should ‘happen’ to come across any valuable info/fixes — I will add that material here.
