Yes, that "midwest nice" attitude.
I've experienced it first-hand in multiple parts of the country growing up in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's (me - mixed race, green eyes, light skin, blond/brown hair - now brown & gray) - and we still have racist/supremacist attitudes....
It's that superficial nonsense that throws everyone off. "Oh it's so nice, welcome" - then behind closed doors, WITHIN the same hour, there are the vulgarities/profanities flying around about you.
I know because I once happened to have caught one conversation that way regarding me (other times were second-hand information)!
The next day, the one guy (a 'super-nice' guy) was trying to be "buddy-buddy" with me - until he realized that I overheard him.
My first reaction was to beat the crap out of him for being racist - but I just looked him in the eye and walked away...
My goal, all my life, has been to be a role model and hope others emulate me, in accepting all others, regardless of race, gender, age, sexual preference as equals.
Of course that is, until they proof otherwise - with dishonesty, sexism, racism/discrimination & not willing to have diversity.
